Statement

Art has a power rivaled only by language. Intellectually, I am engaged in exploring the connections between art and language. Artistically, I am invested in cultivating the elasticity of meaning; a concept in language philosophy referring to the fact that a limited set of symbols can exhibit unlimited, virtually ceaseless possibilities of meaning. Many of the images I use are repeated and many are silhouettes, both as studies of how meaning is affected by the symbol attached to it. With these ideas as the underlying tone of my work, I use cultural references as backdrop and setting for the theatre of personal thoughts/feeling that inspire each piece. My intent is to make art objects that exist as catalysts for people to identify with poetic or philosophical (or other sociological) references that coincide with their own sense of being/living. I paint from memory, and snapshot photographs (a variation on memory)as well as using stencils and collage. In the process of painting, I respond to the inherent aesthetics of the materials and forms that are suggested through contingency. Visually, my work ranges from very crisp, clean and bright to more visceral, process and material oriented surface qualities. I see my work as both shifting and finding balance between a smart expressive symbolism and a meditative perceptual space. Ultimately, the pieces I create are products of my attempt to understand the power possessed by the visual arts.
